Engl 242: Cultural Studies and Non-Western Literature

In this section of Cultural Studies and non-Western World Literature students will read, engage, and analyze non-Western cultural production in its relationship with the West. Rather than re-enforce the biases associated with the West/non-West binary, in the first half of the semester this course will consider texts written about North Carolina and/or Appalachia written by people who are not from the region, paying particular attention to how these texts challenge popular notions of literature, belonging, and citizenship. In the second half of the semester, students will examine the relationships between text and image as articulated in contemporary comics by Indigenous and Latinx writers.
