Questions for “Adventure”

1) How many journeys take place in the text? Do any fail to happen?

2) Setting plays an important part in this story. What is the relationship between Chicago and Winesburg? How are these described?

3) Notice also the interplays between inside/outside throughout the story. What takes place in doors versus outside? How does this intersect with the characters’ own inner worlds?

4) What is the adventure the protagonist finally has? What may she have been planning? Why is her experience both disappointing and terrifying?

5) As we move through the semester, keep this story in mind. Could you construct a feminist reading of the text? What about the protagonist’s psychological inner workings speak to the limitations placed on women in her world? Is hers a failure to overcome them? Must she be doomed? If so, why?
