Ceremony, text, and performance
For this paper, develop an argument concerning the role of performance across either the Popol wuj or Red, and Silko’s Ceremony. Keep in mind that the Colombian scholar Miguel Rocha Vivas will be with us on Monday, March 20, so come with lots of questions for us to discuss.
You could research and focus on any number of aspects of these these texts, but may choose to take it in any of the following directions:
- How do these texts challenge Western notions of literacy and genre?
- What happens when we think of “performing” these texts as readers, as opposed to simply “reading” them?
- How do authors such as Silko and Yahgulanaas challenge readers with non-Western orientations towards text, textuality, and reading?
