Questions for Barnet

As we read Miguel Barnet’s text, keep the following in mind:

1) What is the relationship between Barnet and the man he interviews, Estéban Montejo? It’s Montejo’s story, but how could/does Barnet shape the text you are reading?

2) Who is the audience for this text? Why is that important?

3) What information does Montejo include in his tale? Are there moments when you feel something is being left out?

4) How is the movement from slavery, to abolition, to Cuban Independence described? How does this narrative arc make Montejo’s story the history of Cuba itself?
